...but wow. I had a long experience with a trucker terrorizing traffic for about an hour today. At first I thought maybe they were just falling asleep or not paying attention. But eventually it became obvious they were just driving like a jackass.
This guy kept getting in the left lane despite an almost constant string of NO TRUCKS LEFT LANE signs. Would hold up traffic for miles. But then switch to tailgating people. Literally less than a car length between them and the car in front of them, at 70mph. Then they failed to signal when merging and ran somebody onto the shoulder. And this wasn’t just like some “oops” I wasn’t paying attention accident. For the 75 or so miles I was around them on the highway they kept changing lanes without signalling. Fucking ridiculous.
There was no “how’s my driving?” sticker, I just wrote down the truck number and called the company and explained what I had seen. It seems to be a small company and the phone operator seemed genuinely upset. They tell me the driver has only been on the road for a few hours so far that day, so they’re going to call them and ask what the hell. I’ve honestly never seen anything like this. It was like watching a teenager pretending mom’s hyundai is a race car, only if that hyundai weighed 60,000lbs, and would obliterate any vehicle in its way.
Slightly related, today I also saw a trucker just after the act of obliterating a guard rail.

You did the right thing. What a dick.
The only time I’ve ever reported someone was when there was this person on a single lane highway in a Sorrento who twice, in the rain, passed cars and forced cars in the oncoming lane to dive into the shoulder to avoid hitting them head on.
If I could have conceivably caught up to that person, I’d have pulled pulled them out of their car and smashed their face in. I get angry just thinking about it now.

I reported a guy in a late-90s Camaro last fall. Traffic was pretty heavy and he kept speeding in and out of the lanes trying to get through. I must have seen him almost hit a half dozen people. I don't care if you drive fast, but drive safe.

Perhaps you should have hung up with the company and then called 911.

If I had known the local number for the police where we were driving, I would have called them first. But I didn’t feel it warranted an emergency call.

I call on people too and would certainly call on this truck driver. I see somebody else mentioned calling 911 and you didn’t want to because you didn’t feel it warranted it.... sounds pretty bad to me but I’ll take your word. I run into drunks sometime on my 6pm commute, amazing. I think I normally dial the local police department but I have called 911 before.

911 will gladly transfer you to a local non-emergency police line.

Man, what an idiot. Calling the company was definetly the right thing to do here

Yup. I drive a lot on the highway, I’ve done this more than once. From someone clearly drunk, to someone impersonating a cop just to get people to get out of their way.

Any call for emergency services should go through 911, most places don’t even publish local numbers anymore as they would rather 911 handle dispatching. (which sucks when you want to speak to a particular officer and you have lost his business card) From what you describe it is a legit 911 call as they would rather get him off the road now than end up responding to a more serious call out.

Might cost him his job - but you might have saved a couple lives. I don’t have a bunch of patience for professionals drivers that refuse to drive professionally.
